TRAI to implement revised MNP rules from December 16

The new rules of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) that were finalized in December 2018, will be implemented from next month, as per Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). They have announced that the revised MNP rules will come into
place on December 16.

Under the new rules, you'll be able to port your number within the same circle in just two days.

MNP rules to get implemented 12 months after finalization :-

The new MNP regulations (Seventh Amendment) will be implemented in India after 12 months of discussions and testing.

These rules were set to come into effect on November 11, but a week before that, the implementation was postponed indefinitely.

However, the new implementation date of December 16 has now been set after giving the stakeholders "additional time for reconfirming the desired tests."

New rules will allow porting your number in 2 days :-

As part of the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Seventh Amendment) Regulations of 2018, you will be able to port your mobile number within the Intra-Licensed Service Area (Intra-LSA) or the same circle in just two days.

For inter-circle MNP wherein you are porting your number from one circle to another, the process will take five days. Currently, the MNP process takes around 8 days.

Corporates will be able to port 100 numbers per letter :-

Further, under the new MNP rules, for corporate porting, the present limit of 50 numbers will be doubled. Hence, any corporate entity will now be able to port as many as 100 numbers per authorization letter.

Operator will be fined for wrongful rejection :-

Under the new regulations, a telecom operator will be fined upto Rs. 10,000 for any misinformation about the portability or wrongful rejection.

"If any access provider or mobile number portability service provider contravenes the provisions... (it shall) be liable to pay an amount, by way of financial disincentive not exceeding Rs. 10,000 for each wrongful rejection of the request for porting," said TRAI.
