Google Will Delete These Accounts By December 2023 - Check more here

If you haven't used or signed into your Google account for at least 2 years, your account might get deleted by the end of this year (December 2023 to be precise). The internet giant made the announcement in its recent blog
post under inactive account policies. The company clearly stated that content within such accounts including Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar, YouTube and Google Photos will be deleted starting in December this year. The decision has been taken as a part of Google's ongoing efforts to strengthen security measures and reduce the risk to its vast user base. Earlier in 2020, the multinational tech giant had informed its users about shuting the accounts of those users who have been inactive for two years.

Why is Google Deleting Accounts?

Elaborating on the reason behind this decision, Google in a blog post said, "Our internal analysis shows abandoned accounts are at least 10x less likely than active accounts to have 2-step verification set up. Meaning, these accounts are often vulnerable, and once an account is compromised, it can be used for anything from identity theft to a vector for unwanted or even malicious content, like spam."

How Google Accounts Can be Kept Active?

Google listed out several actions that a user can undertake to keep his/her Google account active. These include

  • Reading or sending an email
  • Using Google Drive
  • Watching a YouTube video
  • Downloading an app on the Google Play Store
  • Using Google Search
  • Using Sign in with Google to sign in to a third-party app or service

Are All Google Accounts Part of This New Policy?

No, the policy is applicable only to personal Google accounts and will not affect accounts for organizations like schools or businesses.
