Here's how you can claim IRCTC travel insurance

From October 1, 2018, railways have made travel insurance optional and chargeable. IRCTC offers an insurance cover of up to Rs 10 lakh for less than 50 paise. This insurance cover is for passengers traveling on a valid ticket. 

According to the IRCTC, "Insurance policies are contractual obligations between the Insurance
company and the passenger. In case, passenger opting for insurance, the claim or liability shall be between passenger and the Insurance Company."

It may be noted that the customer receives the policy information through SMS and on their registered email IDs from the insurance company along with the link for filing nomination details. 

Eligibility for IRCTC train travel insurance-

Any Indian passenger booking e-ticket through IRCTC official website or app can opt for train travel insurance. Children below the age of 5 years and foreigners are not eligible for this train travel insurance. After paying for the ticket with insurance, a passenger will receive a notification and email from the insurer with the policy documents.

In case of a person's death or permanent total disability during the train journey, the maximum cover of Rs 10 lakh is given. If a person is disabled (permanent partial disability) due to a train accident then Rs 7.5 lakh will be given. However, in case the person gets injured then the hospitalisation expenses for the injury is Rs 2 lakh and for the transportation of mortal remains is Rs 10,000. 

How to claim insurance money-

It is important to note here that IRCTC has a tie-up with Shriram General Insurance Company, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company and Royal Sundaram General Insurance Company in the country for providing the compensation. Passengers can contact with any of these while filing for a claim.

How to claim IRCTC travel insurance policy money :-

Click on 'Travel insurance'

While booking the ticket, you will require to click on the 'Travel insurance' section. 

Policy information will be sent

After this, the passenger will receive the insurance policy information via SMS on the registered mobile number and registered email ID from the insurance company. 

Fill nomination details

Once the ticket is booked, the passenger will receive the link to file the nomination details. These have to be filled at the respective company site.
