Everything you need to know about UAN

An account number, in general, is a unique identification number that helps you keep your information, money, and other assets safe. Your bank account number and your consumer account number, which allows you to pay your utility bills, are
some of the most common variety of account numbers that you must be familiar with. The UAN number also uniquely identifies your Employee Provident Fund deposits and keeps them safe.

A UAN, generated for every provident fund contributing member, acts as an umbrella for the multiple member IDs allotted to an individual by different organisations. The idea, therefore, is to link multiple Member Ids allotted to a single member under a single UAN. This number is only accessible to you. This unique identification number, in a way, is a virtual lock and key to your PF deposits.

What is UAN?

UAN stands for Universal Account Number which is a 12-digit number allotted by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to both you and your employer. The UAN acts as an umbrella and helps you port various PF accounts started for you by various employers under one number which is accessible only to you. This will help the member to view details of all the Member Identification Numbers (Member ID) linked to it. UAN is required to provide during the joining of a new establishment to enable the employer to in-turn mark the new allotted Member ID to the already allotted UAN.

How can I find my UAN number?

Go to the EPFO’s Unified Member Portal for UAN related services. Select ‘Know your UAN status’ and you will be redirected to another page. Enter details such as current member ID or EPF account number, name, date of birth, mobile phone number and email. Once you submit these details, you will get an authorisation PIN on your registered mobile number. Enter the PIN to get your UAN.

How can I activate my UAN number?

Go to the EPFO website and click Activate UAN on the bottom-right corner of the page. Punch in your UAN, name, date of birth, mobile number, and the captcha text. Then click Get Authorization Pin. You will now get an OTP on your mobile number. Copy it and verify all the details on the EPFO page, and tick the check-box next to I Agree. Validate the OTP from your phone and Activate UAN.

What are the facilities given to members through UAN?

The UAN presently facilitates the following -

- Download Passbook
