Paytm warns against fake messages and calls over KYC fraud

Paytm is one of the biggest digital payments players in the country with a user base that runs into millions. While its popularity may be good news for the company, it also creates problems as there are many who try to use the platform
to scam people.

To fight against such people, Paytm has now issued a warning asking users to not fall for scam messages and calls from frauds pretending to be company officials. In a statement, the company has said “If you have received any SMS/call asking you to download any app for KYC completion then please do not trust these communications, these are fraudsters attempting to get your details."

Vijay Shekhar Sharma said in a tweet:

Recently, we've read reports that fraudsters have been calling Paytm customers to ask them to re-activate their KYC. IN such calls, these fraudster tell the customer to install remote access apps like AnyDesk, TeamViewer, and QuickSupport to help them with the KYC process.

Once the app is installed, they tell the customer to accept the permissions asked by the app and then ask for the unique address code that is generated within the app. This allows fraudsters to access the customer’s device remotely for them to monitor, exploit the phone data, and banking apps on the victim’s smartphone.

With the number of frauds increasing, the company has also warned its customers against fake messages that try and trick users in the name of cashback and other offers. The messages that are doing the rounds say that your KYC has been completed and you have received a cashback/offer; to access the offer, click the link.

As obvious, such messages should either be reported to the company or ignored as they are from frauds looking to scam users of their money.
