IRCTC refund rules for counter train tickets cancelled via e-ticketing

With the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) online portal, www.irctc.co.in, a person can cancel the train tickets booked from the railway reservation offices, Indian Railways counters.
On cancelling the counter train tickets from the IRCTC e-ticketing website, users are also eligible to get a refund of the booking amount which is calculated as per the prescribed guidelines of IRCTC.

According to IRCTC, once a passenger confirms full cancellation of the PNR, the PNR will be marked as cancelled but not refunded in the system. The seat/berth will be released immediately and the refund amount due will also be displayed to the passenger on IRCTC website, it said.

  • In case of confirmed tickets, the refund amount can be collected on submission of original PRS counter ticket from any PRS counter of Indian Railways up to 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train and up to thirty minutes before the scheduled departure time of the train in case of RAC/waitlisted train tickets for all the train tickets cancelled (including return journey tickets) before 24 hours of scheduled train departure time.
  • The refund of cancelled PRS counter tickets through IRCTC website or IRCTC helpline number 139 at present is permitted only at the journey commencing station or nearby satellite PRS locations by surrendering original journey ticket for all the train tickets cancelled (including return journey tickets) between 24 hours and up to 4 hours for the confirmed tickets and up to thirty minutes for RAC/waitlisted tickets before the scheduled departure.
  • IRCTC advises that customers cancelling the counter train tickets to check the convenience of collecting refund from journey commencing station before cancelling your ticket.
  • The train tickets booked under Privilege Ticket Orders (PTO), the passengers may or may not be able to cancel the train tickets from the IRCTC e-ticketing website as in many cases train ticket value on PTOs is less than the cancellation charges. The PTO tickets are issued on 1/3rd of the total basic fares and normal cancellation charge is applicable in these tickets.
