Forgot your ITR e-filing password? Here's how you can reset it

Income tax return filing deadline July 31 is just a few days away. From this year onwards, taxpayers who fail to submit their return in due time will be required to pay a penalty for late filing. Taxpayers filing returns
for the financial year 2018-19 and the assessment year 2019-20 must clear their income tax liability before the last date.

It may be noted all normal Indian citizens below the age of 60 years whose gross annual income (excluding the eligible tax breaks) exceeds the basic income tax exemption limit of Rs 2.5 lakh are required to file income tax returns. The income tax exemption limit for senior citizens (between the age of 60 years and 80 years) and super senior citizens (above the age of 80 years) has been fixed at Rs 3 lakh and Rs 5 lakh respectively.

Taxpayers can file their returns online through income tax return e-filing website www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. In case you have forgotten your password, you can easily reset it using either Aadhaar OTP, net banking login, DSC, e-filing OTP, secret question answer.

In order to reset your password do this:

Step 1: Visit e-filing website and on Homepage, click 'Login Here'.

Step 2: Click on 'Forgot Password' link.

Step 3: Provide user ID, Captch and click on 'Continue' to proceed.

Step 4. You can further choose either of the five options available to reset the password.

1. Using Aadhaar OTP:

Step 1: Select 'Using Aadhaar OTP' from the drop-down menu and click on 'Continue'.

Step 2: You will be redirected to a page where you can confirm your Aadhaar number. Click 'Generate Aadhaar OTP'.

Step 3. Aadhaar OTP will be generated and sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. User must enter the Aadhaar OTP received and click on 'Validate' button.

Step 4. On success, the user must enter the new password and confirm the password.

Step 5. Click on 'Submit'.

2. Using net banking login:

Step 1. Click on 'e-filing through NetBanking' link.

Step 2. Select the bank from the list of banks providing the e-filing login facility.

Step 3: Login to the net banking account and click on 'e-filing' link available on the net banking page.

Step 4: User will be redirected and logged in to e-filing portal. Click on 'Change password' from 'Profile Settings'.

Step 5: Enter the new password and confirm and the password.

Step 6: Click on 'Submit'.

3. Upload Digital Signature Certificate:

Step 1. Select 'Upload Digital Signature Certificate' from the drop-down menu.

Step 2. User can select any one of the two options provided- New DSC or Registered DSC.

Step 3. User must upload signature file generated using DSC Management Utility and click on the 'Validate' button. The DSC is validated.

Step 4. On success, the user is required to enter the new password and confirm the same.

Step 5: Click on 'Submit'.

4. Using e-filing OTP:

Step 1. Select 'Using e-filing OTP' from the drop-down menu and click on 'Continue'.

Step 2. Select 'Registered Email ID and Mobile Number' from the drop-down.

Step 3. Click on 'Validate'. e-filing OTPs would be sent to the registered email ID and mobile number.

Step 4. Enter the e-filing OTPs received and click on 'Validate'.

Step 5. On success, enter the new password and confirm it.

Step 6. Click on 'Submit'.
