Money debited but train tickets not booked on IRCTC? What you must know

A person booking a train ticket from the IRCTC e-ticketing website or reserving seats for an IRCTC Tourism package might face difficulties while paying the booking amount due to the high number of transactions per second. If you have faced
an issue in which the ticket has not been booked even after the deduction of booking amount from the respective credit card, debit card, bank account linked with the net banking, mobile wallet.

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has addressed the issue and has incorporated requisite systems with which such possibilities can be reduced and appropriate action can be taken in case of such an event.

According to IRCTC, the online payment at IRCTC involves a complex system of technical and telecommunication networking integration between customer’s Internet bandwidth, IT systems of banks and payment gateways and is dependent on internet connectivity across various constituents. Any failure or delay in this complex network may cause transaction failure before completion, IRCTC said. Which implies that the failure in any transaction can arise due to any of the aforementioned factors or due to the occurrence of more than one shortcoming at a time.

Following such instances, there might be a situation with the user when the money gets debited from the bank account but ticket not booked due to the possibilities such as payment settled but ticket not booked or settlement failed and ticket not booked.

Money debited but ticket not booked

1. If a passenger has opted for a particular berth at the time of booking and ticket not booked due to the choice of berth not available or due to the failure in the network may create a situation of ‘payment settled but ticket not booked’. In this case, IRCTC reverses the amount which is credited back on the next day to the respective bank. However, the bank may take 2 to 3 days to credit back the amount in the bank account through which booking was done.

2. In case there is a system or network failure at banks end or at the payment gateway before remitting ticket booking amount to IRCTC may form a situation of ‘settlement failed and ticket not booked’. In such occurrences, IRCTC doesn’t receive any amount due to the settlement failure. The amount is with the bank. The bank will refund the money after due verification.
