Worried about sharing Aadhaar number? Now get an Masked Aadhaar

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new feature called 'Masked Aadhaar' in order to make Aadhaar safer. 'Masked Aadhaar' is an option that allows
a person to cover their 12-digit unique identity in the downloaded Aadhaar or e Aadhaar. In case someone is asked to furnish Aadhaar has their ID proof they can do so without their Aadhaar number on display.

It may be noted that  E-Aadhaar is a password protected electronic copy of Aadhaar, which is digitally signed by UIDAI. According to the Aadhaar Act, e-Aadhaar is as valid as the physical copy of Aadhaar for all purposes except for subsidies, government schemes and DBT. e-Aadhaar can be downloaded by visiting visiting UIDAI websites - https://uidai.gov.in/ or by visiting https://eaadhaar.uidai.gov.in

In the new 'Masked Aadhaar' feature, the 12 digit identity number will get masked and only the last 4 digits will be displayed. However, the demographic information, photograph, and the QR code will still be visible. The move aimed to make people use Aadhaar card more as an identity proof. To download the Masked Aadhaar, one will have to use the e-Aadhaar facility from the UIDAI website. Once they are on the page to download the e-Aadhaar, they get a choice to select between 'Regular' and 'Masked Aadhaar'.

e-Aadhaar can be downloaded in three ways:

1. Enrollment Number: Residents can download the e-Aadhaar using a 28 digit enrolment number along with full name and pin code. An OTP is sent to your registered mobile number for verification or one can also use TOTP (time-bound OTP) to download e-Aadhaar. TOTP can be generated using the mAadhaar mobile application.

2. Aadhaar number: One can also download e-Aadhaar by using the 12 digit Aadhaar number along with full name and pin. An OTP is sent on the registered mobile number. TOTP can also be used to download e-Aadhaar instead of OTP.

3. Virtual ID (VID): One can even use the 16 digit VID number to download the 'masked Aadhaar'.

Worth mentioning here is that the security of the Aadhaar database has been questioned multiple times in the past few months. Hackers have claimed to hack the database and steal information if billions of people. Some even claim that bank account details can be hacked with the help of Aadhaar number. UIDAI has time and again denied all such claims and has stated that such claims are completely baseless and used to malign Aadhaar. The new 'Masked Aadhaar' feature can help those who are hesitant to reveal their Aadhaar number while showing Aadhaar as ID proof.
