Microsoft Edge will not get Chrome Extension Support until 2016

Microsoft new Edge browser is promising as the core is relatively fast and efficient performance. But it has been unable to bring momentum with the current features being very
bare-bones. The browser doesn’t either support Internet Explorer's extensions and plugins and there is no way to add these features. However, Microsoft has got the solution in the form of Chrome-like HTML-plus-JavaScript extensions.

While the users have expected these extensions to be added in the first major update to Windows 10 coming next month, Microsoft has disappointed with its latest announcement that the extension support will be coming as an update only in 2016 and not in the next month.

Microsoft launched its next-gen browser Microsoft Edge as a challenge to the Chrome and Firefox, and initially it has been quite promising, but has lacked the significant aspect, which is Microsoft Edge Extensions. Microsoft has decided to take more time to develop the extension support in Microsoft Edge, rather than releasing it in the Windows 10 Threshold 2 update.

As per the current reports, Chrome is the most used browser with 65% using it in the market and it was widely-used due to the factors of speed, accuracy, and user-friendly interface. Now, Edge is proving to be a promising interface, but Microsoft delaying the extensions may turn as a setback and the delay behind this is since, Edge doesn’t support the Internet Explorer 11 extension style, it will have to incorporate HTML5 and Javascript.

The Windows 10 Threshold 2 update will include some new features for Edge like the show previews of each tab's contents when hovering the cursor over the tabs and other updates but not the third-party extensions.

Microsoft in its statement said, “We’re committed to providing customers with a personalized web experience, which is why bringing extensions to Microsoft Edge continues to be high priority. We’re actively working to develop a secure extension model to make the safest and most reliable browser for our customers, and look forward to sharing more in a future Windows 10 update in 2016.”
